While foreign language education in Japanese high schools emphasizes developing communication abilities by integrating more than one skill1), there is limited research on developing and validating rating scales for assessing reading-to-write (RTW) skills at the high school level. This study aims to report on the initial stages of validating a rating scale for assessing RTW skills. Specifically, we focused on the evaluation inference within Knoch and Chapelle’s2) argument-based validation framework, attempting to collect backing for four assumptions. The three authors of this study scored 169 responses to RTW tasks written by Japanese high school students. Results of many-facet Rasch measurement analysis indicated that the rating scale structure functioned well according to criteria set by Bond and Fox3). Fit statistics further demonstrated that the three raters rated consistently with the rating scale. Several biases were identified in rater-criterion combinations, though no consistent patterns emerged. These findings contribute to linking the evaluation inference from observations to observed scores within an argument based framework, advancing the validation of the rating scale for RTW skills. |
